Vinnies Win Award

On Monday the 29 August, the Nelson Area Council Vinnies received recognition at the TrustPower Community Awards when they came runner-up in the Education and Child/Youth Development section. The award recognised the Vinnies efforts in delivering Meals-on-Wheels once a week; visiting the Christchurch residents from Nazareth house who had to relocate to rest homes in the Nelson Tasman area after the February earthquake; making paper bricks and blankets for refugee families; distributing firewood to people in need; establishing a community garden to grow produce for people who are struggling and working alongside the Tasman District Council with their Pride of Place project addressing the issue of graffiti vandalism in the community. There to receive the award were Waimea College student, Liam Gill who is part of a Vinnies group that assists the refugee children at the Victory Homework Academy; Julia Froeling and Daniel Winch who are Saint Paul Vinnies and Philippa Winch, the St. Vincent de Paul Nelson Area Council Vinnies Youth Co-ordinator. Hot on the heels of this award is the placement of eight large mosaics in the Cambridge Street Park in Richmond created by the Garin College and Saint Paul's Vinnies. Together these eight mosaics tell the story of the important work that youth volunteers do in the community.
